NSI officer’s wife’s bank account for hundreds of crores of rupees, ACC case

The wife of an officer of the Directorate of National Security Intelligence (NSI) accumulated Tk 126 crore 33 lakh as bank account in 15 years. At the same time 125 crore 25 lakh taka was withdrawn. Although the business is shown in the name of the wife, the husband has done banking transactions.

This couple has several flats, shops and land in Dhaka. There is house and land in Natore outside Dhaka. Land has also been purchased at St. Martin’s Island in Cox’s Bazar. There is a six and a half storied commercial building in Savar’s Birulia.

NSI assistant director Akram Hossain and his wife Suraiya Parveen own so much wealth. The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has registered a case against the two after finding information about their known non-income assets.

ACC has received the information of known non-income assets of more than Tk 6 crore 70 lakh in the name of Akram Hossain currently working at the head office of NSI. Apart from this, he has concealed information of assets of Tk 1 crore 61 lakh in the statement of assets submitted to ACC. And the ACC has received the information of Suraiya’s known non-income assets of about 21 lakh taka.

ACC Deputy Director Moshiur Rahman told Prothom Alo on Tuesday that a case has been filed against Akram Hossain and Suraiya Parveen on May 21. Further legal action will be taken subject to investigation.

An ACC official told Prothom Alo on condition of anonymity that Akram Hossain became the owner of huge wealth by abusing his power while working as an assistant to directors of NSI by threatening to prepare negative reports against various businessmen and politicians. The ACC took the initiative to investigate the question about the assets.

A resident of Naopara, Natore, Akram joined NSI in 1989 as a junior assistant. After eight years, he passed the examination as a departmental candidate and became a field officer (junior field officer). He was promoted to Assistant Director in 2016. The ACC began investigating the assets of Akram and his wife in 2020. According to the ACC investigation report, Akram first bought 24 percent of the land in Natore in 2002. After that, he bought about 208 percent of the land in the name of his wife and himself, including 2 and a half percent in Dakshinkhane of Dhaka and 20 percent in St. Martin Island. He bought the most land between 2014 and 2020.
